Denomination: Evangelical Lutheran
St. John's has a long and faithful history of ministry in the North End of Winnipeg. Organized in 1907, the congregation has welcomed immigrants and other newcomers of Lutheran and Reformed backgrounds. Although members of the congregation have aged and some migrated to suburban congregations, active members continue a caring ministry of worship, support and service. The congregation offers worship services each Sunday in German (9:30 AM) and in English (11:00 AM). English worship services are conducted alternately by Pastor Don Engel, Pastor Ken Kuhn, and Pastor Lanny Knutson. German worship services are conducted by lay leaders. The worship services are easy to participate in, using worship resources and hymns from the Lutheran Book of Worship, With One Voice, Songs for Gospel People and the German Evangelisches Gesangbuch. Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month with a Coffee Time Fellowship held the third Sunday of every month between the two services (10:15 AM to 10:55 AM). The congregation has a strong sense of fellowship and concern for the pastoral care of its members. An Annual Picnic, Fall Supper and Adventsfeier are highlights of the year. The congregation shares its resources with the ELCIC, has built a cabin at Luther Village, sponsors a bursary at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Saskatoon, supports projects through Canadian Lutheran World Relief and other community services. People in all parts of Winnipeg are invited to share in the worship, fellowship and service of St. John's congregation.
