Denomination: Roman Catholic
St Jerome’s Punchbowl was established in 1935 and has continued to be a living parish, meeting the needs and challenges of the local area.
The parish, after a period of discernment, established a Parish Pastoral Council in 2007. The Parish Pastoral Council has been a great asset to the parish, working in collaboration with myself to meet the pastoral needs of the parish and nurturing the gifts of our community. It shares in the ongoing life and development of our parish community, working together with myself and parishioners to provide support for their effort to love as followers of Christ.
We are very much a multicultural parish. We are gifted as a parish community with a wide variety of backgrounds, traditions, languages and cultures where we truly see diversity and harmony coexisting.
Many past and present parishioners have given of their time, energy and love to build a truly faith-filled community centred on Christ under the patronage of St Jerome. Many parishioners are volunteers who are involved in a variety of ministries; however there is still much that needs to be done.
It is within our parish community that we celebrate the ways we experience Jesus Christ who is risen and present when we gather and worship. We draw on his divine power he offers us for our daily lives, and seek his forgiveness for our sins. Especially in this Year of Mercy, promulgated by Pope Francis, we as a parish community are challenged to show the compassion and mercy of Christ as expressed in the Year of Mercy motto: Be Merciful like the Father.
Our parish motto is “Proclaim the Word” and we as a parish community strive to live that out through BOTH word and action as we bring Christ to others. Our parish community is only kept alive through the involvement and generosity of parishioners.
May our Parish Community of St Jerome be a sign of God’s presence in Punchbowl – a place in which we experience God’s love, mercy, compassion, solace and peace in the Holy Year of Mercy.
