Denomination: Methodist Church
Shaldon is a small village at the mouth of the River Teign, opposite Teignmouth and about five miles from Newton Abbot. During 2017, we celebrated our 150th Anniversary. With its central position in the village, the rooms are used by a number of village organisations, including a regular playgroup and keep fit sessions.
We are a very warm and friendly congregation and enjoy welcoming visitors to our church. We share fun and fellowship together after our service on a Sunday morning, over coffee and biscuits in the schoolroom.
Every Wednesday, there is a coffee morning with a 'bargain' stall and books for sale, with profits going to various charities. In the summer it is popular with visitors, but has a regular following all year round. We have a church breakfast on the first Saturday of each month, at 8.15am, where we share fellowship over a continental breakfast and then listen to a speaker. We also have a monthly Faith & Fellowship bible study and 'Open the Book' bible story sessions at the local primary school.
Each summer, we have a cream tea event with stalls on the village green, which is always very popular, and several times we have held a Christmas Tree Festival in the church with a theme of Christmas carols.
Other activities include occasional 'bring and share' and hot lunches, as well as events for special occasions, joining with the other churches in the village at times like Good Friday, Remembrance Sunday and Women's World Day of Prayer.
The Teignmouth section of the circuit - Bishopsteignton, Dawlish, Shaldon and Teignmouth churches - take it in turns to hold a Come and Praise on the first Sunday evening of the month. This is an informal worship service, often with items like drama to illustrate a theme, such as Journeys, 23rd Psalm or Seasons, and is always a good opportunity for singing and alternative styles of worship, as well as sharing fellowship with each other.
