Denomination: United Methodist Church
Come join us for worship at 11 AM Sunday morning. We practice progressive Christianity at El Pueblito with an emphasis on social justice issues. We are open and affirming to the LGBT community in our midst. Every Easter we sponsor an ecumenical sunrise service on the west side of the Gorge Bridge at 7:00 am, rain, snow, or shine! Regular Sunday worship is at 11:00 am – and we like to say that we are a “guilt-free zone!” All are welcome.
Our largest ministry at El Pueblito is Shared Table.
Shared Table began in 1994 as an outgrowth of a vision-minded congregation to do more for the community as they saw the need. We are not a soup-kitchen, rather we distribute food and basic health-care items, plus some school supplies, on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of every month, all year long. We open to the public from 11:00 – noon in El Prado and also distribute from 2:00 – 3:00 in the Talpa community center. We partner with Taos Presbyterian church to reach a wider number of folks at both the north & south end of town.
We receive many varied referrals from within the community of Taos. When community members see a need & ask themselves, ‘who you gonna’ call?’ The answer is more often than not, Shared Table! We do not assist with rent or utilities, nor do we help fix old trucks. Our primary emphasis is to see that no one goes hungry. The sad reality of living in New Mexico is the high poverty rate. NM ranks last in the nation in terms of child poverty; almost 30% of our children live below the poverty line. Therefore we help in distributing diapers/pampers to mothers & grandparents who have need of them.
Cheri Lyon is the Director of the Shared Table; Eve Tovino, is the kitchen manager; Mike Flaherty is the food rescue coordinator.
