Denomination: United Church of Christ
WE ARE A WELCOMING CHURCH
We mean it! (And if that's not your experience with us, please let us know!) We've found something in this community and in our relationship with God that has really made a difference in our lives, and we want to share it.
We're a small enough congregation that you'll quickly be known by name, but we're large enough that you can remain anonymous for a while if that's more comfortable.
WE ARE AN "OPEN AND AFFIRMING" CHURCH
Jesus welcomed everyone. We believe we should too. In 1998 we amended our by-laws to expand our welcoming statement:
"We who cherish Alki United Church of Christ as our spiritual home have formed a community of faith in the loving presence of Jesus Christ. Believing that all people are created equal and have the right to seek God's presence in a loving community of faith, we proclaim that all who seek compassion, respect and love for their fellow beings are welcome into this church, regardless of race, age, gender, physical ability, level of education, opinion, social position or sexual orientation."
WE ARE A THEOLOGICALLY PROGRESSIVE CHURCH
We're more concerned about creating loving relationships and a just and peaceful world than we are about subscribing to every detail of some creed or dogma. But we do value the heritage of our Christian tradition, and we take the Bible seriously (though not literally). We believe that "God is still speaking" and we need to be open to new insights and new understandings. It is up to each of us to make the faith relevant for the particular challenges of our own day. We believe that if we open our hearts, minds and spirits, God has the power to transform us and our world.
WE ARE A CHRISTIAN CHURCH
We take Jesus seriously. We believe that God was revealed to us in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus in a unique way, and we commit ourselves to following the ways of Jesus Christ as best we are able. In all that we do we seek to be guided by that same spirit of love that was in Jesus Christ.
IN THE HEART OF ALKI
Located just a couple of blocks from Alki Point in West Seattle, we are close to the beach whether you walk north, south, or west. The beauty of our surroundings is breathtaking, with water all around us and the Olympic mountain range across the water to the west. We hold our Easter Sunrise service on Alki beach, and make good use of the beach and neighborhood parks for other church events.
We share our sanctuary and meeting rooms with Kol HaNeshamah (West Seattle's Progressive Synagogue Community), and one of our most popular programs is Alki Kids Place, an after-school and summer childcare program founded by Cheryl Snyder in 2008.
Our building is a meeting place for many community groups, including West Seattle Neighbors for Peace, Alcoholics Anonymous, Tae Kwon Do classes, and the Alki Co-op PreSchool meets in our building Mon-Fri nine months of the year. Join us!
