Cartwright Anglican Church

The Sandwich Bay Mission was established in 1885, when the Reverend Francis Colley, volunteered to take on the challenge of ministering along the coast. He made his headquarters first at Paradise River, and later at Cartwright.

Cartwright has the distinction of hosting the first ordination to take place in Labrador. This was on July 22nd, 1928, when Reverend H.A. Turner was ordained by the Reverend John S. Anderson, Bishop of Moosenee.

The Reverend Henry Gordon has had a major influence in this area of Labrador as well. He was ordained in 1910 and served in Liverpool, England before moving to Labrador. He arrived at the Cartwright headquarters of The Sandwich Bay Mission Of The Church Of England on August 17th, 1915. His mission extended hundreds of miles along Labrador's coast: from Batteau in the south, around Sandwich Bay and Lake Melville, and Cape Harrison to the north. He married Carrie Ashall at Cartwright on June 29th, 1922. Gordon kept a daily journal which was published in England twice a year. Money raised from the sale of these booklets helped to fund his work. In the summer of 1923, Reverend Gordon was involved in a boating accident. This injury continued to bother him, and was a major factor in his decision to return to England in 1925.
