St. John's Episcopal Church, Compass
Episcopal Church
The small church with a big heart!
Our church has a long history starting with a log-cabin structure in 1729. A second building was erected in 1755. It housed Revolutionary War soldiers and the Rev. Barton, loyal to the Crown, fled to England. The present stone church was erected in 1838. President James Buchanan’s brother—Fr. Edward Buchanan—was married to composer Steven Foster’s sister and served as Rector of the parish in the 1800’s. The center and side chandeliers in the nave were electrified in 1979 and the stained-glass window above the altar was installed in the early 1900’s.
We are a spiritual home for young and old, rich and poor, those who grew up Episcopalians or never set foot in an Episcopal Church before. Our people are friendly and welcoming to all who seek God’s truth and are bold enough to proclaim the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
