HERITAGE, HOSPITALITY AND THE MYSTERY OF GOD

Situated in the heart of Sydney, St James’ Church is now approaching its 200th anniversary. The Parish is an open and inclusive Christian community that seeks to live out the good news of Christ through its many activities of worship, welfare support to the homeless and needy, pastoral care, educational programmes and music ministries. We are a diverse group of people that welcomes all, regardless of age, race, sexual orientation or religion.

THE PARISH MISSION

To be a faithful and inclusive Anglican community in the heart of Sydney which proclaims Jesus Christ, grows in the Holy Spirit, and shares God’s gracious love with all.

THE PARISH VISION

To provide a place where we deepen our knowledge of God, we open ourselves to God’s healing love, and we serve our neighbour with humility.

WHO WE ARE

Saint James’ Church is the oldest surviving church building in Sydney. It was built in 1824 and has been part of the Christian church scene in Sydney for nearly 185 years. When you visit us you will find that our worship style is a bit different to the predominant style of Anglican worship in the Sydney area. We make use of robes and we use incense in some of our worship. We also have a very fine Choir that sings and leads the worship at the 11.00am Choral Eucharist with beautiful settings that are often musically complicated.
The relevance and contemporary immediacy of the Christian message is expressed at St James’ in forms that remind us of the continuity of Anglican tradition. So when you visit us you will find that our worship style is very much in the mainstream tradition of Anglican worship worldwide.

St James’ has a deservedly fine reputation for its music. In addition to the Choir, the church has a fine organ and we host many concerts throughout the year. Our series of Lunchtime Concerts on Wednesdays at 1:15pm is particularly popular with those who work in the city.

The St James’ Institute was established in 2007 to provide a comprehensive programme of events and activities that can teach, nourish and inspire us in our Christian lives. The programme is very wide-ranging; you are sure to find something to interest you.
To walk around St James’ is to take a tour of the history of the old penal colony and of the state of New South Wales itself. The architect, Francis Greenway, was a convict and the bricks were laid with convict labour. The church contains a rare collection of 19th century marble memorials, a unique Children’s Chapel and an extensive sandstone Crypt, all of which are well worth a visit. Do come and visit us. We hope to see you soon.
