Oxford Street Community Church
Baptist
Oxford Street Community Church (OSSC) is part of Te Whanau Putahi (TWP)
TWP is a Christian family centre serving the high-need area of Fairfield in Hamilton. The centre provides ‘wrap-around’ services for families in need, including childcare, school holiday programmes, counselling, a foodbank, budgeting and workshops on literacy, numeracy and parenting.
Through their existing services, TWP staff were seeing many local residents who had never worked, or lacked the basic skills to obtain and retain a job.
TWP has found small work opportunities for long-term unemployed people, such as section maintenance, house painting and wood-chopping, to get them used to working and to supplement their family income.
“In our current sad economy, looking for a new job can seem like an endless and futile task,” says Hugh McCready, Employment Coordinator. “At TWP Project Employment, I am trying to help young people (and older) to increase their value and journey them towards full employment.”
The Tindall Foundation has funded the Project Employment scheme since 2009. Last year TWP supported nearly 34 people between the ages of 16 and 64 years, and about a quarter of them have found meaningful work. The others have upskilled themselves by completing courses or apprenticeships.
