Anglican Parish of Burin
Anglican Church
The Parish of Burin had its earliest beginnings in the early 19th century with the Parish records dating back to September 1841. The Parish has undergone some restructuring over the years. At the present time the Parish consists of three congregations:
Holy Trinity, Burin; St. Andrew, Port au Bras and St. Matthew, St. Lawrence.
The Rectory is located in Ship Cove, a large two storey, five bedroom dwelling overlooking Burin harbour.
This area has a strong economic base with the main sources of employment being related to the fishery; the shipyard in Marystown and government and health care centres.
There are approximately 400 families in the parish. The Parish of Burin covers the southeastly portion of the Burin peninsula and includes the communities between Burin and Lawn at the tip of the peninsula. The distance from the farthest point is approximately 52 kilometres.
Two Health Care facilities as well as a Seniors Home fall within the jurisdiction of the Parish boundaries. Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre, Burin is an acute care facility. The U. S. Memorial Health Care Centre located in St. Lawrence has a long term care unit; palliative care unit; protective care unit and clinic. Mount Margaret Manor also located in St. Lawrence adjacent to the Health Care Centre is a personal care home for seniors.
The people of the Parish of Burin in response to the love of God
are called to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ by worship and
sacrament, by word and action, under the guidance and power of
the Holy Spirit. Following Jesus, we are led to be a servant
community which ministers and witnesses in the world to the
transforming power of God’s love. (We share the Diocesan Mission Statement)
